Chapter Twelve

Weeks passed, and I fell into a routine. Lumino meeting me after one class, Jhoren after another. Celia took her turns seriously, keeping an eye on me in our dorm at night. Making sure I was tucked in safe and sound. Valla had offered several times to walk me to the cafeteria or library, but Celia or the guys were always there first, which was fine with me. Can’t say I cared much for how she stared at Lumino and Jhoren. But then, I really couldn’t blame her, either. They were both hotties. Good news? I hadn’t seen the monster again.

Today’s space laws and theories class ended, and I had to admit I was enjoying it more than I’d thought I would. Especially, the zero-G labs. We’d done science experiments and had a class in ship repair where we suited up with helmets and gloves then went about replacing burned or broken parts on a spacecraft. Not as easy a task as one might think.

We also took turns shooting projectile weapons. Thank goodness I’d read the homework and knew to hook my foot under a strap so I didn’t go zipping off backward like the first three students. Each of us also got a turn at using a jetpack in zero-G. Again, not as easy as they made it look in the movies—a little thrust went a long way.

It was fun. But it was also quite a workout. On the upside, my spacesuit looked pretty darn good on me, and Celia had lifted the transport pod ban she’d placed on me after I ate too many slices of fudge cake.

The downside to those labs was Xan. Every time I stepped out of the locker room, dressed in my spacesuit, boots, and helmet, I couldn’t help but look around, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. And when I did—because being the teaching assistant, he was always there—my heart did a little pitter-patter flippy thing, and it seemed an invisible thread pulled me toward him. But he made sure to stay on the opposite side of the hangar from me, and I gave him his space, even though my soul ached to be closer.

I also did everything I could to avoid the padded box attached to the hangar ceiling where Xan first kissed me. Where he’d called me his zserie. It hurt to even look at where we—

“Zoe, genealogy club begins in twenty minutes.”

“What?” I tucked my translucent aqua-blue class cube into my backpack.

“Ms. Zimmerman,” Professor Vrikins grumbled. “Is there an issue?”

“No, sir.” I tapped the side of my head. “Just my scheduler telling me my…um, schedule.”

“Fine.” He gathered some items from his desk then strode toward the door. “Make sure you review the chapter I assigned for next week.”

Well, there went another four hours of my life. Space laws and theory class was a bear. A big ole alien bear with four arms. But I was determined to make my goal of going into space before the end of my sophomore year.
