“Hey, man, what are you doing?”

I shouldered the phone, feeling like a housewife, and hurried into the kitchen, trying to find my wallet. Justin had called me right when I was getting ready to head out.

“I was just getting ready to head to the dress shop to get my suit tailored.”

“Oh, damn, it came in already?”

“When you have money, anything is possible.”

“Hey, Delilah told me about your little stunt in the dress shop. I can’t believe you bought that little girl all those dresses. Do you think you can win Mayci back by getting to her little girl?”

“Nah, man,” I said, shaking my head and opening the junk drawer I had already filled in the week I’d been living in the apartment. I moved the things in the drawer around but didn’t see my wallet there. “It’s actually not about Mayci… it’s Raya. There’s something about her that just pulls at my heartstrings. I can’t help wanting to do things for her. It’s like she has mind control or something.”

“Speaking of that,” he said, “I think there’s something fishy going on here. Delilah avoids the topic any time I bring it up, like there’s something about Mayci that you really shouldn’t know. And now that you’ve confessed your love to each other,” he snickered like he wasn’t a fully grown man, “I know that’s not it. So I’ve been wondering what it could be.”

“I’m sure whatever it is, it’s not a big deal. I trust Mayci, I don’t think she would be keeping anything from me.”

“Do you know how old her daughter is?”

“No, man, it’s not that,” I said, straightening up. “I thought about that too, I thought that maybe… but Raya is only four.”

It was bitterly disappointing that Mayci had been with someone else during the time I had been gone, but it’s not like she knew I was coming back for her. I tried to push the thoughts - and the images - of her with someone else out of my mind.

“Hmm,” Justin said, and I could almost see him shaking his head, chewing his lip and thinking as he made the noise. “Did I tell you about my new position?”

“I mean,” I said, finally finding my wallet and slipping it into my back pocket. I locked the door behind me and headed out into the hallway, grabbing the phone from my shoulder and holding it as I spoke. “You told me that you got a new job, but you didn’t tell me much about it.”

“Okay,” Justin said, “it’s this new company. They are specializing in like… cheating and stuff, you know? Kind of like what we used to do, but much mellower. Not much of a chance that I get killed doing this.”

I stopped in my tracks. Not much of a chance?

“Justin,” I said, pressing the button for the elevator and turning my head like I was trying to look at him, “you can’t be serious! We just got away from all that shit, and you already
