Chapter 15

With Jack outside, Olivia went back to peeling potatoes and tried to ignore the rhythmic thump of wood against wood as the two men restocked the woodpile. The sound accelerated as if they were seriously competing to see who could go the fastest. Typical. And so annoying. Connor’s attention was impossible to ignore at the best of times, but today he’d taken it up three notches the moment he’d met Jack.

She sighed. At least Jack’s presence would discourage Connor.

Olivia had almost finished peeling the last potato when she heard soft footsteps outside. She looked up to see her best friend Lexie, takeaway coffee in one hand, shopping bags in the crook of the other elbow. Even with her hands full she somehow managed to pull off her cap revealing a thick springy mass of tight black curls.

‘Hi, Lex.’

‘Hey.’ Lexie dumped her shopping bags on the bench.

‘Thanks for bringing me coffee.’

Lexie screwed up her face. ‘Sorry. Hands were full.’ She took a sip from her cup and sighed. ‘Tastes good.’

‘Tease. I thought you were working today.’ Olivia worked with Lexie in the Intensive Care Unit at the Niagara Falls hospital.

‘The unit was quiet. They offered me the day off. I had a ton of shopping to finish so I said yes.’

‘Did you hear about Les and Sally’s daughter?’

Lexie nodded. ‘As soon as I heard you were going ahead with the dinner, I came down to see if I can help. Has there been any news on the baby?’

‘I had a text early this morning from Sally with a photo. They had a bit of a scare, but Aimee and baby are fine despite how early she is. Twenty-eight weeks. They’ve named her Hope.’ She handed Lexie the phone and her friend squinted at the screen.

‘Man, that’s a tiny baby. It's amazing how they use all the same equipment we have in ICU, but in miniature size. I take my hat off to the paediatric team. I couldn’t do it.’ She gave the phone back. ‘What time did you get here this morning?’

‘Early. I’m okay now but I’ll need all the help I can get this afternoon if I want to have dinner on the table by six.’

‘I'm more than happy to help. Where’s my little princess?’

‘She’s at Beck’s place playing with Noah.’ Beck was a friend Olivia had made through Scarlett’s child care centre.

‘Nice one.’ Lexie drained the last of her coffee and rolled up her sleeves. ‘Want me to start cutting the potatoes?’

Olivia handed her a knife. ‘In slices please.’

‘Not going to roast them this year?’

‘No, we’re having them au gratin this year.’

‘Very fancy.’ She began slicing the potatoes. ‘Any idea who the mystery hunk is outside with Connor?’

Olivia pulled out large roasting pans and put them on the bench next to Lexie so she could start layering the potatoes. ‘Scarlett’s father.’

The knife fell from Lexie’s hand and clattered on the tiled floor. ‘I’m sorry. What? Did you say Scarlett’s dad? That’s Jack?’

Olivia nodded.

‘He’s hot.’

Olivia felt a flush creep up her neck.
