CHAPTER 06

* * *

LUCA

TONIGHT IS ALL I have. I only have this one evening, this one chance, to convince Heather we’re right for one another. There are so many things I want to say. So much I need to share.

And I better make it worth it.

Naomi gives Heather an excuse and sneaks off. I’m left with her dinner, and the two of us sit on the couch together.

Heather moves her food around, her eyes narrowed at me. “I can’t believe it.”

I grin. “What?”

“You and Naomi. You’re like Pinky and the Brain with these plans.”

I chuckle. “Of course I’m the Brain.”

Her lips move in a barely-suppressed smile. “I wouldn’t be so sure.”

Our chat flows while we eat. As always. Then Heather puts the plates away and sits, turning to me. She’s so beautiful. Her red hair appears almost black during the night, and I keep my eyes on her. I need to commit the image of her to memory, just in case it all goes wrong.

My stomach churns. No. I won’t think of that possibility.

“Remember how we used to close our eyes and tell each other our deepest secrets?” I murmur. “How we allowed nothing between us?”

Her eyes grow sad. “Of course I do. But things change.”

I reach out for her fingers. They’re warm in my hands, small between my palms. “There’s something I want to know about you. But I don’t want you to hate me for asking it.”

Heather sighs. It’s such a bone-deep sigh I want to take her in my arms and never let the world hurt her again. Her green eyes meet mine with hesitation. “There are things I want to ask too, but... I’m afraid they might hurt.” She sways her head from side to side. “We’ve been over for years now, Luca. There’s no reason to mess with this.”

I grip her fingers tighter. “I understand how much I hurt you. And I’ll spend the rest of my life making up for it if I have the chance.” She opens her mouth to complain, but I keep going. “But there’s something else, isn’t it? You have been hurt by more people.”

It takes her some time, but she nods.

“What happened?” I whisper, putting some of her hair behind an ear.

Heather worries her lip for a moment before locking eyes with me. “I’ve had other boyfriends. It never worked quite well... Some were jerks, others were controllers... Then I got engaged.”

The word pierces through me like a sharp knife. It twists into my heart.

She’s been engaged. To who? The idea of someone else touching her, claiming her, makes my vision red.

“I didn’t love him, but... My parents insisted I could never have another chance. So I accepted.” She shrugs. “He cheated on me and told me I shouldn’t be mad.” Strangled laughter pours from her lips. “In fact, he told me I shouldn’t mind, since I should be grateful for him giving me a chance. As if.” She rolls her eyes, and I see her orbs glisten with unshed tears.
