About an hour later, they parked in front of a small, cozy house, with light stucco walls, a red tiled roof, and a lime tree growing in the front yard. It looked homey and welcoming in a way their past few safe houses hadn’t.

Danielle glanced at Shawn as he pulled the car around to the back of the house. His expression was stoic and shuttered in profile. He was still so handsome, and yet he looked so different from the way he’d looked this morning—back when he’d been happy and relaxed—that the contrast was physically painful. He hadn’t said a word to her since they’d gotten rid of her computer. Since they’d realized she was the one who’d been leading the bad guys straight to them all this time. “Another safe house?”

Shawn turned off the car engine and unbuckled his seat belt. “Kind of. Come on.”

The back door swung open before they’d gotten out of the car, and a tall, blond man headed out to them, an intent expression on his face. He was gorgeous, muscular in a lean, ropey way, with sun-streaked hair and a golden tan. A week ago, she might have thought he was the best-looking guy she’d ever seen in person. But then, a week ago, she hadn’t met Shawn. “You guys okay?” he asked as he grabbed their bags and ushered Danielle, holding Grace’s car seat, inside the house. “You weren’t followed?”

“Not anymore,” Shawn said shortly.

Danielle tried not to flinch. Anger and guilt ate away at her, like acid in her gut. When she’d thought about what she’d done, how close they’d been to those men catching up with them, to getting her, to getting Grace… She followed Shawn inside, struggling to swallow back the shame.

“Thank goodness you two are all right.” A slender woman in a cheerful lemon-print sundress crossed over to them and hugged Shawn—and then, to Danielle’s surprise, turned and hugged her as well. Her rich brown eyes were framed by tortoise-shell glasses, and her long, wavy brown hair was pulled back in a bouncing ponytail. The woman gave Danielle a warm, friendly smile that made her want to weep. “I’m Joy. You must be exhausted.”

“I’m fine,” Danielle said automatically, trying not to look at Shawn. She knew she’d ruined that magical feeling that had started to spark between them, that giddy sense of joy that had somehow superseded even the danger that they were in, and that thought had her feeling the polar opposite of fine. But she had no one to blame but herself. She was almost grateful when Grace started to stir and fuss, so she could shift her attention to the baby instead. “She’s probably getting hungry, though.”

“Of course. While Shawn and Brennan are talking about security details, let’s get the two of you settled.” Joy put an arm around her and guided her towards the stairs, leaving the men behind. Shawn didn’t look up to watch her go, and Danielle eventually managed to drag her eyes away from him and focus on Joy.
