CHAPTER EIGHT

After almost getting kidnapped at the zoo, followed by hours of police interrogation, Laurissa was too tired and hungry to even think about going out to dinner, much less cooking something. So, she and Lane had come back to his apartment and opted to snack on whatever was in his kitchen, namely a monster sized bag of tortilla chips and a jar of avocado salsa.

“Hanging out with you is absolutely horrible for my diet,” she murmured, reaching her hand in the bag for a handful of chips, because right now, she was too hungry to care. “I’ve eaten more junk food with you the past few days than I have in the past year. We need to get some healthy snacks in here.”

“You make a list of stuff and I’ll buy it,” he said softly as he helped himself to some chips. “We can get takeout if you’d rather.”

Laurissa glanced at Lane to see that he looked as tired as she was. Well, maybe not quite as tired. Her legs felt like Jell-O, even after hours of questioning from the police. These adrenaline crashes sucked. She didn’t know how Lane and his SEAL Teammates lived like this.

Then again, maybe they didn’t deal with it like she did. Maybe they’d been in horribly dangerous situations like the one earlier today so many times that their bodies no longer even noticed. Maybe the fact that they all could have died didn’t even phase them. Considering how calm Lane had been today at the zoo, she’d have thought he’d been taking a walk in the park.

“So, any idea what’s going on between Lennox and Talia?” she asked, nibbling on a salsa smothered chip. “It was like she was upset at him for saving her life or something.”

Lane chuckled, reaching for the glass of iced tea they were pairing with the chips. “I think the official line is that Talia felt like she had the situation under control until Lennox tackled her. She seemed upset that he assumed she couldn’t take care of herself.”

Laurissa frowned, taking a sip of her own tea. “What’s the unofficial line?”

He snorted. “Unofficially, I think they were flirting.”

“O-kay. Well, I’m a big believer in you-do-you. Tabby is going to be disappointed when I tell her that Lennox is probably off the market, though.”

Lane laughed again but didn’t say anything.

“Do you think the police bought that story we told them about what happened at the zoo?” she asked after a moment. “Some of them looked a little skeptical.”

He grimaced. “Can you blame them? Our story pretty much boiled down to the zoo being shot up by a bunch of guys in suits—possibly with ties to organized crime—going after a group of men in lawn maintenance uniforms. I also don’t think they bought the part about all of us being innocent tourists who got trapped in the middle of the shooting.”

Lane and Lennox had told the police about being in the Navy, which was common enough in the San Diego area, but Laurissa noticed that neither one of them had mentioned they were SEALs.
