CHAPTER 22

MACLEAN FELT THE NEED for a jolt of caffeine and a quiet smoke. He drove to the closest coffee shop and got himself a coffee and then sat outside at a table reviewing the latest conversations in his mind. Where do I go from here? How do I prise what Kyle knows out of him? Or maybe he really knows nothing. He took a deep drag and then had a fit of coughing. His eyes watered and he blinked to clear them as he swallowed some coffee. Gordie dropped his half-smoked cigarette on the ground and crushed it under the toe of his boot. He pictured the look Vanessa always gave him when he went out for a smoke and realized he didn’t want to see that look again. That’s it. Gotta kick this habit.

He finished his coffee, picked up the butt, and dropped his paper cup and the crushed cigarette into the garbage bin at the edge of the parking lot. Then he took the half pack of cigarettes from his pocket, felt the comforting shape of it in his hand, and then dropped that into the garbage as well.

When he settled himself in the car, he took out his notebook and called his partner. “What news, Roxanne?”

He listened with interest as she briefed him, jotting down notes as she spoke. “Good work. Did you call Jeffreys yet to question him about what he saw or heard?”

“I tried, but he didn’t answer. I left a message. He may be in a bad service area.”

“OK, are you on your way back from Pleasant Bay now?”

“Yes, I should be in Port Hood in about fifteen minutes.”

“Right. I want to meet with Adam’s friends and how about you take the two women who are friends of Sharon’s? The focus is on what they noticed about the family. Any changes in their behaviour in the past month or so. Any arguments they heard about or witnessed. Any concerns they had about their friend. Things like that. I’ll be asking the same questions of Adam’s pals.”

“Do you want to meet up when we’re done?”

Gordie felt a shiver run down his back as he recalled a previous time when they were to meet up and it had all gone so terribly wrong. “Yes. Shall we try for the Tim Hortons in Port Mulroy for five o’clock?”

“Sounds good.” As if she had read his mind, she added “Don’t worry. I’ll be there.”

He laughed. “You better be. No going off somewhere without letting me know, and I’ll do the same.”

“Right, boss. See you then.”

Once Gordie called the two men, Andy LeBlanc, and Johnny McMaster, and arranged to meet with each of them, his next call was to his colleague Detective Rob Norris.

“Norris? MacLean here. Just wanted to check in and see how you are doing with getting the financials for MacDonald.”

“I was going to send you the report this afternoon. Yeah, no issue getting the warrant, so I’ve got everything now, both the business and the family accounts for Adam and his wife.
