Decoupling Networking Applications from Networking Gear

In addition to the problems caused by network-wide distribution of intelligence, there is also a problem with the way we develop network applications and code on these systems. Again, keep in mind in this context that we are talking about networking applications such as routing and optimization as opposed to the applications that run on your computer or smartphone. Current practices also inhibit user innovation. The problem here is that in addition to each network device having its own control plane, each device also has its own complicated operating system, which also has to be set up, secured, maintained, and reconfigured every time a change is made.
