“Sarah? I must speak to you.”

Sarah, her mouth open in mid-conversation, stopped suddenly and rose to her feet, hearing the urgency in her brother’s voice.

“Do excuse me,” she said, rising quickly to her feet, fearful that there was something wrong with her brother. “Mary, might I—”

Lady Mary and Miss Kelling sat together, their faces both held in expressions of concern as they heard Lord Broadford calling for Sarah yet again.

“Something must be the matter,” Lady Mary murmured, setting down her teacup with great care. “We ought to take our leave. I should not wish to interrupt anything that clearly has such a grave importance.”

Sarah gave her cousin a small smile, grateful for her consideration. “I thank you, cousin,” she said, now making her way to the door for fear that her brother would continue shouting all over the house until he discovered her. “I think that I—”

The door opened before she could reach it, and the next moment, Sarah found herself staring at her brother, whose face was not at all in the expression she had expected. Instead of dull, grave eyes, her brother’s eyes were bright, practically dancing as he looked at her. No frown lined his forehead, and his lips were pulled into such a broad grin that Sarah found herself wanting to smile back at him in return, without even knowing why.

“Ah, there you are!” he exclaimed, grasping her hand tightly. “I have been searching the house for you. I…oh!” Seeing Lady Mary and Miss Kelling sitting together, he cleared his throat, released Sarah’s hand, and gave them both a short bow. “I am very sorry to have intruded. I did not realize my sister had company.”

Lady Mary smiled at her cousin, her concern mitigated by the bright expression on his face. “Not at all, dear cousin,” she replied swiftly. “We were just about to take our leave.”

Sarah looked to her brother, seeing how he opened his mouth, then closed it again with a frown.

“No, there is nothing of such grave concern that it cannot wait,” he said as Lady Mary instantly sat back down in her chair, ready now to hear whatever it was Lord Broadford had to say, or to otherwise continue her conversation. “I do apologize, Sarah. I had quite forgotten that you had company.”

Putting her hand out, Sarah caught Lord Broadford’s sleeve. “You cannot simply leave the room without giving me some idea of what it is that has you calling my name in such a fashion,” she said as quietly as she could. “Is there something the matter?” Her stomach twisted suddenly. “There is no illness or any such thing?”

Her brother laughed, his expression growing all the more delighted. “No, indeed, there is nothing of concern,” he replied, patting her hand. “It is very good news, in fact.” His eyes seemed to glow, and he beamed at her, as though she had answered all of his prayers in some as yet unknown way. “Come, if you wish, I will speak to you of it and then you can return to your friends.
