Chapter 15

Elkie slept fitfully and awoke still feeling the fatigue of her last several weeks of effort. She’d yet again been plagued by that dreadful nightmare. Only, this time, when six-year-old Elkie looked back it wasn’t Bryan she could see being dragged away by a tall thin man with blonde hair. The boy in the clutches of the bad man had dark hair and olive skin, just as her brother had – but it was Brendon being held, not Bryan. Waking, even though fatigued, came as a relief. She rose thinking the only good thing about the day was the smell of coffee permeating her senses.

Once a hot mug was in her hand she felt a little better. That was until she sat at her desk in her living room and looked up at her Wall of Shame. Then, she felt utterly depressed once more.

In spite of more than three weeks of solid effort, all of her pedophiles were still free to roam in the city. The exception, Harry Whittaker, didn’t count in her summation. He was as much a victim as Isaac White; suckered into a debauched realm of Pierre Menard’s making. There was not a single doubt in Elkie’s mind that Whittaker would do prison time for his misguided efforts to emulate his mentor. After all, there was no hot-shot lawyer around to look after him.

She rose from her desk, walked to her wall and removed Harry Whittaker’s mugshot. Her scrutiny of him was well and truly over. She sat back at her desk and fed Harry’s photo through the shredder she had situated on the floor underneath it.

As the last of Harry’s photo zipped through the machine, she looked across at the mugshot of Pierre Menard. He would be behind bars soon, but she feared it might not be soon enough. Her greatest concern was that Menard would seek out Brendon for revenge. She needed to warn the boy to keep a wary eye out for the narcissistic vet until the law had had ample opportunity to deal with him. She wasn’t sure how she’d accomplish that without being on the receiving end of yet more of Leila’s wrath.

Moving on to the next case, Elkie studied the STI source investigation while she sipped at her coffee. She was confident she’d identified all the sources of the Sexually Transmitted Infection. Maria and Patricia were, for the most part, innocently entangled in Daniel’s sick obsession with sex. The police were aware of Patricia’s involvement and Elkie was confident that the slim gymnast would be made aware of Daniel’s syphilis infection as a part of Detective Jolly’s ongoing investigation. Poor Maria of course, was already aware and Elkie hoped that would inspire her to assist Detective Jolly wherever possible.

Elkie finished her coffee in one large gulp before she stood and removed all the information from the STI source investigation that didn’t relate to Daniel Sikes. Finally, she removed every mugshot in that investigation with the exception of Daniel’s. When she
