“That’s it?” Constance looked at her with wide eyes. “You just left your husband?”

“No, I left my house. My husband is very much still my husband. He’s just my husband in a different house.”

Constance gave her a skeptical look.

“Shut up, Stanley.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You thought it. I heard it on your face.”

“You heard it on my face?”

“Yes.” Ellie pointed a finger at her. “It was right there, screaming at me that there was no difference.”

“What was there?” Millie asked as she walked back into the room.

“The look on Stan’s face saying I was wrong.”

“Oh.” Millie tossed her head back. “I hate when I can hear her thoughts based on the look on her face.”

“Hey!” Constance glared at them both. “I have a good poker face.”

“Not with us, you don’t.” Gran walked back into the room, holding a tray of sweet tea.

“You should have called us. We would have helped,” Ellie lightly scolded as she jumped up to help.

“Eleanor, I swear to all that is, if you imply I can’t handle simple tasks one more time, I’m going to box your ears. I’m old, not dead.” Gran set the tray down on the coffee table. “Speaking of the dead.” She turned and nudged a box with her foot. “I found your mother’s journals.”

“That was a horrible transition,” Constance said as she moved to the box.

“You’re acting like your pregnant, moving slower, adjusting yourself to accommodate the life growing inside you.” Gran smiled at her granddaughter. “And to think, just two days ago, you were moving around like everything was normal.”

“Everything was normal.” Constance pulled the box open and grabbed the first leatherbound notebook. “This is my mom’s.”

“How do you know?” Ellie asked as she moved to sit cross-legged next to the box.

“It’s as though you’re closer to her the second you pick one of them up.” Millie joined them, each girl sitting on a different side of the dusty cardboard with Gran sitting in the chair on the final side of the square.

Connected. That was the word that entered her head when Gran sat, completing the circle. Connected and belonging. Perfect. She never wanted to leave the little circle they created.

Ellie’s hand went to her belly just as Constance did the same. She never wanted to step from the safety that being within reach of each other’s arms gave her. The thought had her eyes snapping up and colliding with Gran’s.

This wasn’t all of her people. She had a husband, the father of her baby, a man she loved, but here she was alone, pregnant, and content to be so.

“I dug through these when I pulled them out, and I think you need to read this one first.” Gran held out a journal. “It touches a little on her relationship with your father and her pregnancy. It also tells about some of the difficulties they went through, their struggles. You need to see that not everything was sunshine and rainbows and that it’s okay that it isn’t for you.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet, child.
