History: The Institute was founded in October 1924 as the Scientific Research Institute of the Peopleâs Commissariat of Education of the Daghestani Autonomous Republic. The primary tasks originally assigned to the Institute were to organize research and train specialists in Daghestani studies, to encourage the development of regional studies, and to spread scientific and political knowledge among the local population.
In 1928 the Institute was reorganized as the Institute of Daghestani Culture, and in 1930 it became the Daghestani Scientific Research Institute under the Central Executive Committee of the Autonomous Republic. In 1945 it became part of the USSR Academy of Sciencesâ newly established Daghestani Base for Scientific Research, which itself became the Daghestani Subdivision in 1949, and in 1990 the Daghestani Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1951 the name of the Daghestani national poet Gamzat Tsadasa was added to the Instituteâs official title.
The Institute was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
Structure: There are 12 departments: history of the CPSU; history of the Soviet period; history of the pre-Soviet period; archeology; ethnography; Oriental studies; sociology; history of the arts; literature; folklore; grammar studies; and lexicology and lexicography.
Staff: 158 researchers, including 1 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 23 doctors and 84 candidates.

Gadzhiev, A.R. Shikhsaidov); written sources on the history and culture of Daghestan (A.R. Shikhsaidov); archeological services in Daghestan (V.G. Ivantsov); the history of the Party organization in Daghestan (V.G. Ivantsov); the history of the Komsomol in Daghestan (V.N. Ganzurov); the development of transportation and communications in the Daghestani Republic (G.A. Iskenderov); Daghestan during the Great Patriotic War (1941â45) (G.Sh. Kaimarazov); development and consolidation of cooperation among the peoples of the Northern Caucasus, 1946â85 (A.S. Gadzhiev); the northeastern Caucasus in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (M.G.
