âHey,â said the small voice. âOpen your eyes. We're here.â
Lee felt a hand knock on his head lightly. He found himself lying flat on his stomach, hard stone underneath him. He turned his head and found the doll standing beside him. To see the doll standing there, its glass eyes blinking, was terrible and awe-inspiring at the same time.
Lee pushed himself up to his knees and tried to keep his cool. His heart beat like a hummingbirdâs. Dear God, is this happening? Is this real?
They were on a bridge made of massive grey-hued stones. The bridge stretched out before them into a forest whose trees were the size of skyscrapers, whose leaves were the size of city buses. The sky above was a golden red. Islands of land floated there, exotic continents floating in empty space amongst clouds that looked as if they were water color paintings. It was beautiful. Beyond beautiful. A sense of fantasy hit him, a surreal weight heavy enough to make his head spin. Lee stood and immediately regretted it, for a wave of nausea came over him. He dropped back to his knees and vomited.
The doll impatiently tapped his foot beside him. Lee wiped his mouth and tried to look at the doll without shrieking in terror. Behind him, there was a rip in space. He could see stars and galaxies out there, behind a wave that was much like a mirage.
âWe have to hurry,â said the doll, with its high, tiny voice. âOur crossing did not go unnoticed.â
âUn⦠unnoticed?â Lee asked, his words barely escaping his trembling lips. âWhaâ¦what do you mean?â
âShit,â the doll blurted. In a way, it could have been funny, like listening to a Disney cartoon character curse, but in here, in this new world, it gave Lee nothing but alarm and concern. The doll pointed up to the sky, and there, swiftly approaching, was a small black cloud, or what could have been the exhaust of a rocket. Electricity crackled around it, and Lee was certain it was coming right for them.
âWhat is that?â Lee asked, his voice barely a whisper, but as he turned to look, the doll was running back towards the gate, its little feet moving in a blur of motion. A roll of thunder and a sharp snap! filled the air, and that black cloud turned into a single brilliant bolt of lightning and came down between the gate and the doll hard enough to send brick-sized chunks of stone flying.
The doll cartwheeled back and landed in a heap of rubble just ahead of Lee. The doll moaned, and then giggled. As the dust cleared, a figure shrouded in black emerged between them and the gate. Lee had seen this figure a million times. It was instantly in his mind. Although it was not exact, he knew this figure. It was Death, the Grim Reaper, the Ferry Man of the River Styx.
A black cloak and hood fluttered around it, as if it the cloth itself were alive, for there was no wind here.
