“Who are you?” she asks.

“We’re your neighbors, naughty Lindy.”

She’s shaking her head. “No. That’s not what I mean.”

I know that’s not what she means. What she means to ask—what she longs to ask is “what are you?”— although she can’t bring herself to do it.

Glamor is a powerful tool, and using it is a skill my kind has developed over time. It’s useful for facilitating obedience in small things, like changing clothes. Nervousness turns to humored indignation.
