Eva walks the narrow trail running alongside the pristine estuary. Pristine! her journo pal insisted. Thanks to him, on account of his spearheading restoration efforts. His masterful ability to prevent these boonies from backsliding.

Eva walks, another kind of waiting. The sun has resurfaced and the mountain shows to the north, the bay a silver disc. Everything she does, a form of waiting. She snaps off a stalk of sea bean and chews. Salt and iodine flood her mouth, sting her lungs. She marvels again: what used to be free nosh now garnishes dishes in fancy west coast restaurants, she’s learned from the past several evenings she has spent living some other life. A more spendy, indulgent one featuring good wine and good food and whatnot—Klonopins and joints smoked beneath the awnings of much fancier hotels than the one Eva is staying at. Another Eva, growing plump, blank as the oysters and clams in these pure waters, captive in their mud beds to someone else’s expertly curated dreaming.

Eva shakes her head. This guy. A workshop in getting what he wants. As she expected, and far worse.

Like her cousin. A master at getting what he wanted from Eva when she was young. Marking her. Inhabiting, contaminating. Miss me, think of me.

She comes to the end of the path, shades her eyes with her hand. This place, tame and lovely. She and her cousin rarely ventured here all those years ago, preferring the oceanside, wind and currents, dead seals.

What is she waiting for?

A sudden finger of joy crazes deep in her gut seconds before it reaches her throat and she croaks a laugh—it’s not so bad. To be beside herself. Walking, waiting. Not so bad to spy across the water a small detail, a prick of shade. Her cousin. His cock out. Taking a piss.
