âMatteo, Lorenzo.â Our Uncle Alonso greeted us the second we stepped into Uncle Toniâs study. Genevieve and Alessia were still at the hospital which was the only reason heâd called us to the house instead of meeting somewhere neutral.
âUncle Al, howâs it going?â
âCanât complain.â
âCome, sit.â He motioned to the table. Nicco; my father; and Stefan, Uncle T and Alâs consigliere, were already seated, their expressions grim. Whatever had happened wasnât good.
âWe didnât know you were driving down from Boston,â Enzo said.
âDidnât know it myself until Michele called me.â The two of them shared a knowing look.
âWhatâs going on?â I said, blood roaring in my ears.
âWe need to make some hard decisions, son.â
âBut Uncle Toni isnâtââ
âHeâs not going to get better enough to return.â
âW-what?â I blurted out, feeling like the rug had been pulled from under my feet. âNic?â
âThe doctor said that even if he wakes up, the road to recovery will be extensive.â He dragged a hand down his face, his eyes vacant and expression haunted. âGiven the new intel on DiMarco and Lombardi, Uncle Michele, Stefan, and Uncle Al decided we need to make the change now.â
âFuck,â Enzo breathed.
âEffective immediately, Niccolò is now acting boss,â Uncle Al said.
Nicco didnât look happy about it. In fact, he looked downright miserable. But I didnât blame him. It was a huge burden to carry.
âStefan is going to stick around, try to help you figure out this Lombardi thing. It could be something, it could be nothing.â
âAnd DiMarco?â I asked, immediately regretting it.
My fatherâs heavy gaze found me across the table. He leaned back slightly, steepling his fingers, and let out a long, steady breath.
âTell them.â
Shit.
I shifted uncomfortably in my chair. I should have kept my mouth shut. But it was too late nowâeveryone was watching me and if I didnât tell them, he would.
âWe have a problem,â I said.
Enzo slouched in his seat, burying his face in his hands.
âOut with it,â Uncle Al demanded.
âIt was my call,â Enzo jumped in.
âNo, it was my call. I take full responsibility for this. It ends with me.â Nicco addressed his uncle and family advisor. âA little over a week ago, Enzo and Matteo went to visit DiMarco. But they never made it to Providence. Enzo got a call from the hospital over in Pawtucket. When they got there, they found one of DiMarcoâs girls beaten and raped.â
I winced at his harsh assessment, my fist curling against my thigh.
âWhat was she doing in Pawtucket?â Uncle Al asked. âAnd why the fuck did she call Enzo?â
Nicco looked to our cousin and nodded.
âA few weeks ago, I was in Providence,â Enzo said. âI came across one of DiMarcoâs girls crying in the bathroom. A couple of days later, he asked me to go check on one of his girls at her apartment. It was the same woman. Something felt off about the whole thing, so I gave her my number and said if she ever needed help to call me.â
âIt was the same girl?â Stefan asked, and Enzo nodded.
