KENZIE

He heard the screaming from his cell. Every bomb and shot that went off made him flinch, as he sat with his hand gripping the bar so tight his knuckles were white. Not knowing was what killed him the most. Whose screams was he hearing?

He paced back and forth in the small space. All he could think of was Sawyer. Was she okay? Would she survive? He had found that as long as he kept his distance from Sawyer, tried not to think of her or the memories that kept filtering into his mind on their own, he was able to ignore the kill order. He didn’t remember it all or who he used to be, yet there were times when she would move a certain way, or say something that sparked an image. A dark, cement-covered room. The feel of the delicate skin over her collarbone. Those memories, small and fleeting, snuck in sometimes, and it made his heart ache.

He knew the army they were facing. If he was honest with himself, there was no way they could beat them. Their plan was a good one, but Coleman’s army was better.

The door down the hallway smashed open, and feet skidded across the floor with haste. Kenzie had his guard up before Max swung around the corner.

He grabbed a key from his pocket and opened the cell door.

Kenzie took a step back.

“He’s not here,” Max assured Kenzie when he saw the fear in his eyes. The thought that Coleman could use him against them once more was running through Kenzie’s mind. “We need your help.”

Max reached for Kenzie’s caged-up hand and pulled out a smaller key from his front pocket. He twisted it into the lock, and the heavy metal cage clanked to the ground.

Kenzie stretched out his fingers. They felt weird and weak, but the power inside of him instantly roared to life, begging to be let free.

“You still have that cuff of yours?” Max asked.

Kenzie pulled the cuff out from his pocket and held it in his hands. It sent a shiver down his spine.

“You’re going to need that,” Max said. He turned to leave the cell, leading Kenzie with him.

“Is it safe?” he asked, worried more for Sawyer than anyone else, but still he didn’t want to harm innocent lives.

“We’re about to find out.”

Tentatively, Kenzie took the cuff and placed it on his left wrist. There was a slight tingle at first before the cuff latched on and dug into his skin. He winced and hissed through his teeth.

“Oh yeah, forgot to tell you about that part,” Max said over his shoulder. He pushed open the door, and the flames burning in the village hit them with a wave of heat. Though his back was to him, Kenzie didn’t feel the urge to kill him as he had worried; instead, he felt a pull towards something far away—something waiting for him on the battlefield. His heart raced.

Max stopped at the end of the hallway and turned to face Kenzie.
