The machine aesthetic

The best-known apostle of the international style was a French architect who went by the nickname Le Corbusier (the crow). His goal, he said, was to “mass produce houses as efficiently as a factory assembly line,” made of poured concrete and stripped of all ornamentation. The resulting buildings were standardized cubist structures that he called “machines to live in” because they had the functional efficiency of a machine. By implication, schools are machines to be taught in, and hospitals are machines to be cured in. In fact, Le Corbusier thought of the entire city as a large, efficient machine. His ideal city was constructed of simple, repetitive lines joined by right angles. It was the cubist grid on a huge scale. Below is his plan for Paris. He wanted to raze most of the city to the ground and rebuild it from scratch. Corbusier called his approach “scientific architecture” and he offered it to city planners as a tool for rational planning and social control.
