Chapter Fifteen

Dakota’s alarm pinged through the quiet morning hours. She stretched and rolled over to turn it off. It would be nice to sleep longer as she had the day before, but those horses needed her, and so did a certain someone who slept one floor beneath her.

A thrill swept through her body. Last night had been enjoyable. If someone had told her she’d spend an evening reading to Brady Shipley out of a romance novel, she’d have laughed in their face. Brady was definitely not that type of guy.

More and more she was realizing Brady wasn’t who she thought he was. There were layers to him that were only just coming to light. He was bookish. What cowboy liked reading rather than spending the day in the saddle? He’d also let his crew go for an afternoon when there was work still to be done. That was nearly unheard of on a ranch this size. And then there was the protective way he demanded she stay close.

True, it had rubbed her the wrong way to be bossed around by the likes of Brady. But some tiny part of her wondered if his protectiveness meant something more. She’d seen firsthand how he’d risked his life for the horses, and then again when he’d tried to find her. He valued the lives of others; he wasn’t just a narcissistic ladies’ man after all.

Dakota slipped out of bed and rummaged through Faye’s things. She picked out a white fitted t-shirt and a pair of worn jeans. After getting dressed, she headed out of her room and down the stairs. Her boots rested at the bottom step, and she scooped them up. As she passed the living room, she peeked at Brady’s sleeping form. Good. He was still resting. The glass of water on the edge of the table still looked pretty full. Maybe he’d fallen asleep quickly last night.

Once out of the house, Dakota pulled on her boots and scurried to the stables. One by one, she led the horses out to a large pasture where they could stretch their legs and graze. Getting Cobalt last, Dakota took him to the exercise corral so she could run him through a few turns.

The sun slowly rose over the ranch, drying the dew from the night before and warming Dakota’s back. She held her hand over her eyes as she worked each of the horses for a minimum of ten minutes apiece. After she released them back into the large grazing pasture, she headed for the cafeteria so she could gather some more supplies for breakfast.

Arms full of fruit, eggs, and potatoes, Dakota hurried back to the main house and directly into the kitchen where she got to work making hash browns and eggs sunny side up. While she cooked, she became increasingly aware Brady hadn’t called out to her or wandered in at the sound of sizzling food. She cocked her head to the side to see if she could hear him stirring.

Brows pushed together, she dished up some food and took the plates into the living room.
