I see the tears you cry.

I see the pain that’s in your eyes.

The volume is low but I can still hear every word. If I wanted to, I could sing with her. These lyrics have been burned inside me for a long time and usually I think they’re real corny but not tonight.

I lie back down wondering if the baby’s parents are sleeping right now and if they’re dreaming about her too. I wonder if my father ever dreams of me.

When the music stops and I’m sure Mom has gone to sleep, I take the napkin out of my pants pocket, sneak into the kitchen, and dial Royce’s cell.

It’s twelve thirty and not a hint of sleep in his voice. “Yo.”

I whisper into the kitchen phone. “It’s Lionel. Can I start that job tomorrow?”

“Yeah, we got something poppin’ at one o’clock on the corner of DeMarco’s.”
