Kate lay with her head on his chest. It felt so good just to be with him, to feel real again. Every time she touched him, more of her past came back to her. The effect had been tenfold when they made love, and she sorted through images of a distant childhood as she stared up at the stars.
âI can get you away from them,â he told her. âYou donât have to be with the brood anymore.â
Kate pushed herself up on her elbows and turned to look at him, finding his eyes in the dim light. âThatâs not how it works. I have to stay with them.â
âWhy?â he challenged. âDonât you know Iâd do anything to keep you safe?â
She sat up all the way now, hugging her knees to her chest and staring out over the ocean. âYou know what I am, but you donât know everything. Thereâs a reason we moved here, Amar, and itâs because of people like you.â Kate heard the shame in her own voice. She didnât want to have this conversation with him, and sheâd hoped to put it off as long as possible, maybe even long enough not to have it at all.
âYouâre feeding on them. On us.â
He made it sound so simple. It had been, until the last twenty-four hours. She hadnât remembered anything about her life before sheâd been turned. There was the humanity that came with being a mortal, the kind of thing that kept most of them from doing such monstrous things.
She sniffed and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. âWe are, but itâs because thereâs something wrong with us. Another brood cursed us, and once the spell took over, feeding on humans just wasnât cutting it anymore. Luca needs even more blood than the rest of us do to stay alive, and he had to resort to feeding on us just to keep up his strength.â
âThat bastard has been feeding on you?â Amar sat up, his fingers digging up angry fistfuls of sand. âItâs bad enough he turned you, but now you tell me heâs using your life force to sustain his own? I wonât stand for it.â Wisps of smoke escaped his nostrils in protest.
She turned and put a firm hand on his broad chest. âIt is right, considering how much we need him. He was just using us to supplement whatever he could find in the wild, and as we made our way west, he happened to feed on a shifter. He could feel how much better it was for him, and when he found out there were so many shifters in L.A., he decided to move us here. We need shifter blood, Amar. Itâs no different than a human having to eat food to survive.â
âIs that how you think of me and my kind? Nothing more than a future meal?â Amar shot to his feet and reached for his clothes. âIf you could see the way the rest of the shifters are grieving for those theyâve lost, you might have a different opinion.
