Kate lay with her head on his chest. It felt so good just to be with him, to feel real again. Every time she touched him, more of her past came back to her. The effect had been tenfold when they made love, and she sorted through images of a distant childhood as she stared up at the stars.

“I can get you away from them,” he told her. “You don’t have to be with the brood anymore.”

Kate pushed herself up on her elbows and turned to look at him, finding his eyes in the dim light. “That’s not how it works. I have to stay with them.”

“Why?” he challenged. “Don’t you know I’d do anything to keep you safe?”

She sat up all the way now, hugging her knees to her chest and staring out over the ocean. “You know what I am, but you don’t know everything. There’s a reason we moved here, Amar, and it’s because of people like you.” Kate heard the shame in her own voice. She didn’t want to have this conversation with him, and she’d hoped to put it off as long as possible, maybe even long enough not to have it at all.

“You’re feeding on them. On us.”

He made it sound so simple. It had been, until the last twenty-four hours. She hadn’t remembered anything about her life before she’d been turned. There was the humanity that came with being a mortal, the kind of thing that kept most of them from doing such monstrous things.

She sniffed and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. “We are, but it’s because there’s something wrong with us. Another brood cursed us, and once the spell took over, feeding on humans just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Luca needs even more blood than the rest of us do to stay alive, and he had to resort to feeding on us just to keep up his strength.”

“That bastard has been feeding on you?” Amar sat up, his fingers digging up angry fistfuls of sand. “It’s bad enough he turned you, but now you tell me he’s using your life force to sustain his own? I won’t stand for it.” Wisps of smoke escaped his nostrils in protest.

She turned and put a firm hand on his broad chest. “It is right, considering how much we need him. He was just using us to supplement whatever he could find in the wild, and as we made our way west, he happened to feed on a shifter. He could feel how much better it was for him, and when he found out there were so many shifters in L.A., he decided to move us here. We need shifter blood, Amar. It’s no different than a human having to eat food to survive.”

“Is that how you think of me and my kind? Nothing more than a future meal?” Amar shot to his feet and reached for his clothes. “If you could see the way the rest of the shifters are grieving for those they’ve lost, you might have a different opinion.
