The next call was to Lucy. “Hey, hon,” his voice softening as he spoke to her.

“Hi, John. About to cook dinner, you coming home?” Lucy replied.

“No, ” he said, pausing for a moment.

Lucy replied with obvious disappointment. “I figured as much, but I thought I might bring you a plate if you’re gonna be on duty until you catch him.”

“Can’t do that now; you’d best stay indoors like everybody else. No tellin’ where this guy is and what he’s got planned. After the murder, we all know what he’s capable of. No . . . it’s a nice thought, but stay put.”

Lucy could hear the tired and worn tone to Sheriff’s Taylor’s voice. She was used to it, but knew all too well that he was functioning on less than a full stomach or a good night’s sleep. He desperately needed both but probably wouldn’t be able to get either one until this Bobby Lee was caught. As they said their good-byes and Lucy hung up the receiver, she pulled her hair up into a chignon and finished stirring the spaghetti. The oven let out a short burst of three consecutive beeps, alerting her that the bread had finished and was ready to come out. So she grabbed the oven mittens and opened the oven door, instantly feeling a gust of warm air against her face as she reached in and grabbed the tray of delicious buttery bread.

She knew he was just worried about everyone, but she was worried about him. The department was only ten minutes from the house. She could make him a plate and be over there and back before her favorite show. Then she would lock the doors and just wait for him to return. She smiled to herself as she thought about her plan. He wouldn’t be too upset when he saw what she had made him for dinner. She knew that he needed to eat something if he was going to be up most of the night. It was decided. After eating, she made a plate of the leftovers and grabbed her keys to head out.

The garage was dark, almost eerie, and Lucy suddenly began to wonder if her idea was still a good one. Be strong, she told herself, though her stomach was in knots. She took the keyless remote and pressed the button to unlock the car. Funny, it did not beep as usual. Must have forgotten to lock up when I came home today, she thought, and opened the door to get in. Everything looked just as she had left it, so she sat down and put the plate of food and her purse on the passenger seat. She noticed her hands were shaking for some reason, so she steadied them and put the keys in the ignition.

The car started with a low purr and then rumbled a bit as the garage door opened. She pressed down on the gas pedal to slowly reverse out of the garage and onto the driveway.
