Equations are solvable only if we can plug in numbers for the variables. With the Drake equation, scientists are using best guesses, and the answer is not a definite number. No one is saying, “There are exactly 1,789 planets with possible intelligent life.” We’re looking at the odds that we are not alone.

And you don’t need to be a math genius to know that any number multiplied by zero is… ZERO. If we plug a zero into any of the Drake equation variables, we get zero chance of other intelligent life in the universe. That’s kind of sad, isn’t it?
