Chapter 4

I took a quick shower, had a quick energy bar for breakfast and then I took out my bicycle from my car and began to peddle hard up the hill that seemed a little more daunting than it did driving in. When I got to the top, it was clear sailing to the bottom and then I crossed the bridge and came to this estate that looked like it had been passed down from generation to generation. It was obviously built when things were made to last. The craftsmanship was amazing and the woodwork alone was a marvel of engineering.

“It bodes well that you are 5 minutes early and we’ve had people that don’t show up for an hour. Come in and I’ll get you something to wear. My name is Yvonne and I am Mr. Reynolds personal assistant and the one that takes care of everything that he doesn’t. He’s busy in his office, but I’m sure that you’ll see him around during the day. He likes to roam and he comes and goes at will. Please do not try anything with him, as he is very strict on employee and employer relations.” She had this Arabic quality and there was definitely a Middle Eastern accent there somewhere.

She showed me what I was wearing and I thought it was going to be some kind of frilly French maid outfit, but it turned out to be something a lot more tasteful than that. The skirt actually went below my knees and the blouse was black, but she insisted that I button up all the way to the top. There was even a pair of white gloves, as the master of the house was a bit of a germaphobe.

She showed me the wing of the house and I would be responsible for and apparently I had the duty of cleaning the kitchen, the living room and five bedrooms including the master one.

It was funny, because I really didn’t like to clean and I could be quite a slob if I was on my own. Even now, my sheets on my bed were strewn aside and my nightie was hung over the bedpost nonchalantly. I still thought of that man and the fact that that car seemed to be pinpointing him. That could only mean that it wasn’t an accident and if somebody was truly trying to hurt him. For what reason, I couldn’t even begin to fathom.

“I think that you should be paired with somebody during the day, just so that you can get up to speed on what needs to be done every morning and at the end of your shift. I believe that Josie will be perfect for a trainer. She’s one of our best and I hate to be sterotypical, but her Indian descent makes her a very hard worker in my opinion. I might be biased, because I’m also Middle Eastern and my work ethic is bar none.” She was dressed in a sensible gray and black pantsuit.
