I do a double take when I spot Jackson in the courtyard the next day. I’ve been on edge all morning after Silas’s unexpected departure late last night. He left minutes after he got that text from his mother about his father being in the hospital, asking to borrow Mason’s car. Mason and I were so bummed, we didn’t even finish what we’d started with Nim. We just left her sprawled on the bed, Mason drawing a blanket over her bruised body.

I detest chaos. And right now it feels like I’m sailing straight into a fucking storm. This morning, Nim woke up looking like shit. Dark rings under her eyes, sallow skin. I showered with her, washed her hair, braided it. But it was like trying to get a mannequin ready for school. She let me do whatever I wanted to her, but didn’t lift a finger to help.

Even our tutoring session was a waste of time. She just sat there, eyes glazed, refusing to answer any questions I put to her. She didn’t even seem grateful when I called the session to a premature end and handed her off to Mason.

Silas hasn’t answered his phone once. I don’t blame him—his family needs him now. Fuck, it’s why we did what we did. Not just for his family, but countless others too. We were too late, though. I can feel it in my bones. He said nothing while we were watching him pack up a duffle bag, while we walked him to the parking garage, while we watched him leave in Mason’s car.

He didn’t have to.

We were already thinking it.

We should have killed that limp-dicked parasite five years ago. Ten. Then things would have been different. How many families could we have saved? How many lives spared?

Those thoughts run circles through my mind. I should be doing my part to unravel Nim’s mysterious past, but all I can think about is whether Silas will ever speak to me again. He can’t hold anything against me, but it’s what people like him do. Those too poor to move out of Jackleg Valley. Those smothered by the smog, blackened with soot, chilled by their drafty houses. They look to someone to blame when God refuses to answer their condemning prayers, and their eyes fall on Blackstone Heights. On the enormous mansions with their walls of glittering, mirrored glass built into the hills. The people inside who lord over them.

I thought he’d come around ages ago. I thought we were friends. But the look he gave me last night as he climbed into Mason’s Escalade didn’t give me much hope. His eyes were as cold and dead as Scarstone Lake.

Now I have Eliza fucking Jackson in my sights, and while I know it won’t help smooth things over with Silas, I’m determined to transfer my frustration onto her. Bitch started messing with my life back in high school already—it’s time she realized her family name isn’t the indestructible shield she thinks it is.

It’s
