Beth

Jacob is almost delirious with excitement, actually bouncing up and down.

“Swimming? Really. I can go in the pool?”

“You can.” Aaron grins at him. “I take it that’s a ‘yes’ then.”

Jacob doesn’t answer. He’s too busy dashing off to find the new swimming trunks his father had delivered for him a few days ago.

“Don’t forget to bring a towel,” I yell to his retreating back.

“There should be plenty there,” Aaron tells me. “Are you coming, too?”

“I’m not sure. I thought I might have look at the central heating pipes. They’ve been making a knocking noise.”

He raises one eyebrow. “You don’t need to do that. I can get one of the men to fix it.”

“Do you have another plumber on the island?”

“Not a plumber, exactly. Callum’s fairly handy with a spanner.”

When someone needs hitting over the head, probably. This requires more finesse in my view.

“Right. Well, you do now. It won’t take me long. Probably just need to bleed the pipes…”

His expression suggests I just lapsed into some obscure dialect of Cantonese. “Bleed the…?”

“Just go and let me get on with it.” I bundle the pair of them out the door and roll up my sleeves.
