Chapter Nine

We left the slums from a different passage point from the one we had come in by, not wanting to pass the area near Álvaro’s house again. There was a decent risk that the cartels had already been alerted to the demise of their two halcones, and I wanted to get on the road without any more interference.

Following a dirt trail on the outside of the wall, we finally made our way back to the truck and took it back into the city. I called Lorraine and gave her Álvaro’s location. She said she would get a medical team out there and promised to call if Álvaro became conscious again and could tell us exactly what he knew.

After eating a quick lunch in the restaurant’s hotel, we checked out and had a rental car delivered. I left the Strada in the parking lot and texted Lorraine to have someone come get it. I wasn’t about to trust that dump of a vehicle to take us safely into the mountains and back again. That, and I didn’t want to spend hours on end with my kneecaps grazing my chin.

The rental company delivered a white Toyota Prado, and soon we were heading east out of the city. The SUV was roomy, and I turned the air conditioning on full blast in an effort to fight against the continually rising temperatures outside.

“Is it just me?” Brad said. “Or am I the only one who wishes that McGuire would have gotten just a little more out of Álvaro before they started for the safe house?”

“That would have made things a whole lot easier.”

Brad leaned his chair back and set a foot on the dash. “So how was your time on the yacht?” he asked.

“Terrific. I’ve ever had such a good time sailing before. Rich’s Lagoon has a self-tacking jib, making it a breeze to handle, and we got in some good fishing off the Dry Tortugas. Zoe is surprisingly good with a rod. When I get back, I’m going to ask Amy if she’ll take Zoe under her wing and start teaching her everything she knows about boats. She loves being on the water and I want to fan that flame.”

“I heard they really like her over at Molly’s Marina. Zoe still likes working there?”

“Loves it.”

“She’s a smart girl. I have a feeling she’ll end up doing some pretty cool stuff one day. How did it go with Charlotte?”

I had known from the very first time I met Charlotte that she was something special. She was poised, confident, and knew what she wanted out of life. And over these last few months, as we spent more time together, I had gotten to see new sides of her personality. She was gracious and kind and had an unusual way of staying calm in moments of high stress. I was lucky to know her and even luckier to be going somewhere with her.

It’s funny how you can enjoy your life before someone you come to love enters it, but when you look back, it’s hard to see why you didn’t feel lonely before.
