Sixteen
Sunday we woke early. Still not as early as Saskiaâs dad. We could hear him clattering about in the kitchen. I went downstairs while Saskia faffed about in the bathroom.
âGood morning, you. Sleep well?â
âYes, thank you sir.â
âAnd whose lives are you going to change for the better today?â
I looked at my feet in embarrassment. âWe donât intend to. It just - happens.â
âI know, I know.â
I said, âWe want to go and visit James and Lydia if you donât mind. Weâd like to make sure everything went well after the weekend.â
âHmm. Wouldnât mind knowing myself. Iâll require a full report - in triplicate.â
Saskia appeared. Rob said, âA dress? Just going to be a normal girl for a change?â
âYes, Dad. We canât dress up all the time you know. Mind you, we could, but pocket money would have to increase alarmingly.â She managed to look hopeful.
âAnd what do you think the chances of that are?â
âHmm, what with inflation, the cost of living increase, government defence spending, funding for the NHS - err - none?
âThe exact figure I had in mind.â
âApparently weâll need to provide a full report on Jamesâ situation when we get back, in triplicate,â I said.
Saskia was serious in an instant. âDo you want to come with us, Dad? We donât mind, do we Saskia?â
I shook my head, âYou would be entirely welcome if you want to.â
âWould I do that? No, no. Iâll just wait âtil you tell me later. I have heard on the grapevine that James might be up for a CBE or an MBE or something. You have not heard that! If he tells you, ok, but not otherwise.â
We both nodded seriously. Rob looked at me and said, âGo and get dressed. Saskia and I will have breakfast ready when youâre done. I expect youâll need a lift in Dadâs Taxi?â
âYou could just lend us the car. Saskia can drive it after all,â said Saskia.
âPerish the thought. Thereâll be time enough for that sort of thing when youâre older.â
After breakfast we got into the car and Rob drove us to the Robinsons. âUsual arrangement. Ring me if youâre not coming back for lunch and if Arnold is bringing you home.â
âWill do, Dad.â Saskia gave him a kiss. Jeeves answered the door. âMiss Saskia and Miss Saskia, good morning. Mr James is in the Breakfast Morning Room. Would you like to join him for breakfast?â
âNo, thank you, Jeeves. Weâve already had breakfast. Thank you for the kind offer.â
âIf you would find your own way, I will at least provide hot chocolate if that would be suitable?â
âYes, thank you, Jeeves. Most suitable.â
Jeeves vanished towards the kitchen and we went to find James.
âAhh. I thought it might be you two. Come and sit down. Has Jeeves offered you breakfast?â
âYes, sir, he has. Weâve already had breakfast but thereâs hot chocolate in the offing.â
James laughed, âI think we may have had to lay in extra supplies of the stuff but never mind. Lydia will be along shortly. Why does it take women longer than men in the bathroom?â
âThatâs easy.
