Gina announced in her loud voice, “I’ll give you five dollars for that picture.”

“But I have to bring it to art class today.”

“Well, tomorrow, after Mr. King sees it. That’s a lot of money, Sarah Harris. You want it?”

Sarey’s stomach went hollow. It was a lot of money, and she did want it. She told herself that she could give Pa the money to help build the house. Still, it was the best drawing she had ever done. She took a deep breath. “I’ll think about it,” she said.

The next day, Gina had the money, but not all of it. She only had three dollars and twenty-four cents.

“It’s still a lot of money,” she said, eyes hard, daring Sarey to say no.

The inside of Sarey’s mouth tasted like rusty water. She eyed the buttons on Gina’s blouse. She remembered Wayne Dinkins and the wild strawberries.

“No, Gina, I don’t want to sell my drawing,” she said. Gina scowled, but did not argue.

Two days later, Mr. King took Sarey aside.

“Each year our school sends a few pieces of artwork to the state fair. I have never sent anything from such a young student before, but I would like to send your dog drawing. I think it could win the junior art prize. The fair isn’t until next summer, but I promise you’ll get your drawing back.”

It could win the junior art prize! And people from all over the state of Maine would see her drawing! What if she had sold it to Gina? Sarey felt something like a little seed of strength inside her chest swell and burst open.
