After the incident with the Indians, Mr. Adams seemed angry at all of us, and I could tell some of us didn’t trust him. The Edwards brothers didn’t seem bothered at all by Mr. Adams’s behavior. Mr. Carter acted like he was on Mr. Adams’s side too. I wasn’t surprised, since they had voted for Mr. Adams to be the captain. I couldn’t tell what some of the others thought.

We didn’t have any more campfires with the whole party together. All that mattered to me was that my parents and Mattie’s were still friends.

Most nights, there were at least three fires going. Mr. Adams and the Edwards brothers were always together. Our family, Mr. Lee’s family, and Mr. Tucker and Charlie were often together. The Carter family kept to themselves. I had a feeling Mr. Carter and his mother didn’t see eye to eye on what happened at the Platte River.

One day at the end of May, Mr. Lee shouted, “We made it to Chimney Rock!”

It looked like a big mountain with a chimney growing out of the top. The most exciting thing about Chimney Rock was that it meant we weren’t lost.

I sat in the shade of our wagon while some of the others admired Chimney Rock. Mr. Adams didn’t know I could hear him when he said, “I can’t stand Lewis. I should have shot him when I had the chance. I need to put him in his place.”

“Yes, you do,” said Mr. Edwards.

I’d like to see you try, I thought. Daddy had already wrestled him down once, and I knew he could do it again.
