Chapter Seven

The front door opened to sounds of laughter and baseball. Samantha dropped the scoop of cookie dough onto the baking sheet and licked what batter remained on the spoon.

If only it were Timmy and one of his Little League teammates coming inside instead of Timmy and Reed. But she couldn’t complain too much. Not after she’d overhead Reed telling Timmy he would never be a geek and how lucky her son was to have her for a mother.

Reed’s words had been sweet. Samantha hoped he meant them. She didn’t want Timmy hurt, but if Reed hadn’t been speaking the truth about being there for him, it might be better if her son found out now before he was used to Reed being a part of his life.

Their life.

A jumble of thoughts ran through her head. Part of her anticipated sharing the milestones of Timmy’s life with Reed, but the other part dreaded it. That was the part of her wanting to share more than just their son with him. She bit the inside of her cheek.

Footsteps sounded in the entryway.

“Take off your shoes.” She placed the pan of cookies in the oven and set the timer. The first batch was sitting on the cooling rack.

Plop, kurplunk, boom-boom. From experience she knew those sounds had been Timmy’s mitt, his baseball and his shoes.

He ran into the kitchen and skidded in his socks to a stop. “Do I smell cookies?”

“You always smell cookies, but yes, I’m baking cookies. The cocoa’s ready.” She took a closer look at him. Dirt stained his jeans and his fleece pullover. Mud streaked his hat and hair. His socks left dirty footprints. “You’re filthy.”

“Aw, Mom.” Timmy dusted his hands on his pants. “It’s just a little dirt.”

“A little?” Samantha stared in disbelief. “I was just outside. Where did all the dirt come from?”

“What dirt?” Reed stepped into the kitchen. He wore a hunter-green turtleneck and jeans. He looked less intimidating, more approachable in the casual clothes. She liked it. A lot. Too much. He looked more like the college-boy Reed, the one she’d been head over heels in love with. Maybe he could change into a suit.

She moistened her dry lips. “On Timmy.”

“Oh, that dirt.” Reed smiled, reminding her of when they’d gone wading in a stream near his parents’ house and gotten soaked. They’d ended up kissing and getting covered in mud.

Her gaze lingered on his full lips and she remembered how nice it was to kiss not only then, but under the mistletoe, too. He kissed better now….

What was she thinking? His clothes didn’t matter, nor did his lips. And forget about his kisses. Samantha focused on their son.

Her son.

“So what happened?” she asked.

“I wanted to show Reed how I stole second base during the regional play-offs,” Timmy explained.

“The first time, he didn’t get dirty,” Reed said. “But I asked him to show me a second time and he slid into a puddle.”

Timmy drew his brows together. “It was more like a pond.”

“Boys,” Samantha muttered.
