patrick Breen was born in Ireland in 1795. he immigrated to Canada and then to the United States with his wife, Margaret, and two children, eventually settling to farm in Keokuk, Iowa, in 1834. he became a citizen of the United States in 1845, and in 1846, the family joined the Donner party heading for California. After surviving the winter of 1846 in the Sierras, the family arrived in San Juan, where patrick took up farming again. The Breens were the first Americans to settle in the community, and patrick was to become a respected member of the town. he died in his adobe in 1868. In this composite photograph, he appears in the lower center. Margaret Bulger Breen was born in Ireland in 1810. Like her future husband, her family also immigrated to Canada. She married patrick there and had two children before migrating to the United States. Eight more were born in this country; however, one died in Iowa. Margaret, known in San Juan for her hospitality to visitors, can be seen in the center of the image.
