The East End Cash Store was at the corner of Eighteenth and M Streets in 1884 in an area of Sacramento known as the “East End.” The George Lichthardt family lived above the store. By 1900, Lichthardt and his son changed the grocery into a pharmacy. Today that end of Capitol Park is still referred to as the East End and now supports many new office buildings and condominiums. This view looks east along Capitol Avenue on the 1900 block as it appeared in 1950. Midtown is a mix of businesses and residences. The Sacramento Union newspaper office at 1910–1914 is pictured on the right. Note the wide boulevard, with enough room for two lanes of cars in both directions and parking on both sides of the street. This wide boulevard is the centerpiece of Sacramento.
