Chapter 8

The Saint Considers

Bozegnoom! That scoundrel!” Peter fumed, pacing the living room. “I’m sure he stole my watch, but how?”

After discovering that his Rolex was missing, the saint could not sleep. He spent the night in the living room, running the scene in the restaurant through his head in an endless loop of memory, yet he could see no moment when Bozegnoom would have had the opportunity to take the watch. Peter first thought the gnome, while suspended in the air, had slipped it off the saint’s wrist, but no. Peter had used his right hand to lift him, and the watch had been on his left wrist. That moment when time seemed to stop would have been the most likely opportunity, but he never took his eyes away from his newly acquired adversary. Yet there was no question in the saint’s mind that Bozegnoom had taken the watch.

That’s when the house phone rang. “Simon?”

“Delilah, is that you?”

“Yes.” The voice on the line hesitated. “I’m being forward, I suppose — usually the guy calls me — but I was hoping we could make some plans for today.”

“Certainly,” he said, abruptly forgetting the mystery of the missing watch. “Do you, uh, do you want to play some golf?”

“Golf? Me?” She laughed. “I’m a black girl from the inner city of Chicago. How much golf do you think I’ve played?”

“Oh. Probably not much, I suppose.”

There was a pause on the line. “I like Putt-Putt, though. Does that count?”

“What is this Putt-Putt?”

“You’ve never played Putt-Putt? We’ll have to correct that. Maybe this afternoon. There’s a nice course just a few blocks away. Meanwhile, I was thinking of spending some time at the beach. I love the beach! And the water here is so beautiful! Besides, I’d like to get a little more sun before my audition. That is, if you’re game.”

Peter thought of the way Delilah looked in a bikini and grinned. “A day at the beach sounds marvelous.”

“I’ll meet you at the tiki bar around ten, okay?”

“I’ll be there.”

Peter, the incident with the watch forgotten for the moment, ordered breakfast to be delivered to his room.

There was a knock. “That’s pretty fast for room service,” he said to himself, as he went to open the door.

One of the resort’s bellhops stood before the entrance. “Good morning, Mr. Peter. I have a delivery for you from a Mr. Bozegnoom.” The bellhop reached to one side of the door, picking up a set of golf clubs and handing it to the saint. “Uh, I was supposed to tell you it’s with his compliments?”

Peter tipped the fellow then closed the door. He stared at the clubs in disgust.

The bag in his hand was in worse shape than the one holding the rental clubs he had used two days earlier. Covered in a hideous mauve tartan that made a mockery of the Scottish heritage of the game, the bag held a motley collection of clubs from various manufacturers. Peter examined one after the other. They were all bent or warped or both.
