Powering up with lights, lasers, and combination units

I still remember when cops carried flashlights big enough to pull double duty as nightsticks. If you’re a fan of the Terminator movies, you know that the earliest aiming lasers were as long as the weapons they were mounted to.

Along with contemporary riflescopes, lights and lasers represent the state of the art when it comes to firearm accessories. (Emphasis on accessories. I’m talking about lasers that you install on a gun, not laser guns. I’ll save that topic for the 14th edition of this book.)

Over time, these gadgets have become significantly smaller and more powerful without wasting a ton of batteries. Most of these types of accessories nowadays are designed to be mounted on a gun’s rail and use easy-to-reach activation switches, but some attach to grips, triggerguards, or receivers instead.

Here’s a breakdown of these gadgets:

Weapon lights are generally used for military and law enforcement operations as well as for home defense because they can illuminate any dark location, be it a room or hallway or even a forest, giving you more visual information about a situation to process and possibly act upon.

Different colors and modes (like constant-on and strobe) are available, too. But there are a few caveats.

Today’s lights are bright enough to blind someone temporarily, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who’s on the receiving end. More importantly, however, if you’re using a weapon-mounted light to search rooms or something like that, you could potentially sweep your gun’s muzzle over an innocent person, violating the second rule of gun safety. That’s why a handheld flashlight is a better idea in that situation.
