Joy, Ease, Lightness, and Beauty

Despite the Blackthorn’s fierce reputation, an overwhelming number of participants described experiences and messages of joy, ease, lightness, and beauty. Joan, while feeling extremely heavy, was told to “Lighten up.” Grainne received the advice to “choose the easy” and to “laugh your fears and sorrows away.” Mary recalled, “the diet was very easy, smooth, and loving.”

Linda was inspired to walk the labyrinth with the intention “to reclaim joy, to really live life with absolute joy.” She felt Blackthorn was working through the family dogs, as she put it, “Before I left the Labyrinth both dogs were trying to sit on my lap and lick my face, trying to say ‘it is this easy.’” Angie also received a message about how to live her life, explaining, “It is about doing what is joyful for me and expressing my joy.”

Pat was reminded that growing old can be joyful. She recounts, “I felt the crone tree wanted to say something to me. I felt what she was saying was that old age doesn’t have to be infirm. At times I get scared that I will get more and more infirm and the tree said that old age is not a ponderous thing; it is joyous and agile.” This transformation of fears is a common theme that we will return to later.

Grace emphasized the beauty she experienced. She described the feeling of coming home and the connections with her mother who had recently passed away:

When we went onto the land and into the herb garden it was so beautiful. It is like the whole weekend has been such a pleasure and beauty is the only word. The night was spectacular—holding the real beauty of the plants and the beauty of the skies and heavens. At the same time I was really sick and with the sickness came negativity, so holding all of that together and being able to hold it and see it clearly. It was fabulous. It felt like coming home to myself. It had a lot to do with my mother whose whole life was spent with plants and she was deeply connected with sacred sites and the Hawthorn, which is like a sister to the Blackthorn. So connecting with the Blackthorn was like connecting with her in a different way and making a new relationship with my mother.

Anna shared that Blackthorn brought her the gift of creating love and beauty in her life. She remarked, “This is a gift I am searching for and the world is waiting for.”
