Chapter 59

Elijah returned to the table, his face as unreadable as oatmeal. He swiveled his head from Steven White to Ryn. “’Sup?”

Ryn laughed to keep from screaming and deferred to the secret service agent.

He said, “We were discussing what a choir boy Chad Gleeson is.”

“Uh-huh.” Elijah nodded. “That phone call was from a friend in Florida. He has contacts at the State Prison in Raiford.” Elijah summed up that he’d learned Chad Gleeson was a model prisoner. Maintained his innocence from Day One. Such a class-act he refused compensation for wrongful imprisonment.

Elijah ignored the looks Ryn and Steven White exchanged, adding, “Our guy now works as an assistant veterinarian in Safety Harbor, Florida. Passed all the classwork and licensing reqs while serving in that great Florida institution.”

Steven White protested, “I searched his name in every database known to hackers and law-abiding citizens.”

“Uh-huh, but did you search for Connor Gleeson? That’s the name the good doc’s using according to my friend.”

“Connor?” Steven White slammed a fist into his palm.

“Any chance Connor and Chad aren’t the same person?” Ryn offered.

“DOB, parents, place of birth, et cetera match. He’s had some good plastic surgery, but … take a look.” Elijah flipped his cell phone under Ryn’s nose.

Two pictures showed a smiling, good-looking man with even features—one with wide blue eyes and short, white-blond hair, the other with piggy brown eyes, black chin stubble, very dark, collar-length hair, and prominent ears.

Ryn squinted, shook her head, and had a flash of a young girl with dark hair and piggy eyes. “I’ve never met him.”

“Except for the ears and facial fuzz, the dark-haired guy looks like Asshole Gleeson,” Steven White pronounced.

“It matches his intake portrait at Raiford,” Elijah said, his tone dry. “And the passport photo for Charles Edward Gleeson, the Fourth.”

“Connor could pass for a choir boy,” Ryn said. “I wonder how much that kind of plastic surgery costs?”

“His patients—especially the women—love him,” Elijah drawled. “Their Yelp reviews and Facebook comments border on erotica.”

“He’s suspected of human trafficking, he’s extorting twenty-five million bucks, and he’s threatening to kidnap a guy he’s never met,” Steven White exploded. “He’s a damned psycho.”

“Not all monsters live in the closet,” Ryn said without taking her gaze off the angelic face staring back at her.
