Chapter Seven

“You couldn’t get it in?” Lola asked.

“Can you believe it? It’s never happened to me before. I’ve been fucking guys for, what, six, seven years. What a joke.”

“That’s crazy. See, if you had done that with a girl, that wouldn’t have happened. A girl can try all she wants. But trust me, there’s never any trouble getting a dick inside a vagina. It’s those tight ass young boys you have to worry about.”

“Hey,” I said. “He was of age. He wasn’t jailbait.”

“Whatever. That sucks, Ryan.”

“I know,” I said, looking up, wondering what the hell happened to our waiter. It was the Friday before Christmas, and I was enjoying an afternoon chat with Lola at one of my favorite Sacramento barbecue restaurants, Kenton McLendon’s.

“You guys ready to order?” the waiter asked, appearing to the left.

“I’ll have the full rack of ribs,” Lola said. “With the French fries, the coleslaw, and the baked beans.”

My eyes went wide, and I shook my head.

“And you?” the waiter asked me.

“Just the pulled pork sandwich, thanks.”

The waiter walked away, and I marveled at Lola.

“A full rack,” I asked.

She pressed on her breasts. “You know it.”

“No, seriously. That’s so much food. What the hell?”

“I diet so much throughout the year,” she said. “It’s the holidays. It’s almost Christmas. I’m allowed to be bad.”

“Yeah, yeah,” I said.

“OK, so what other encounters have you had?” she asked.

“You don’t want to know.”

“Why?”

“What a nightmare. I feel like I’m cursed or jinxed or something. I’ve had three of them, and nothing has gone the way I hoped they would. I’m starting to think I’m going to enter the New Year without getting any this holiday break.”

She laughed. “Guess you’ll have to just depend on your hand, then.”

“No.”

“What?”

“I refuse to let that happen.” I cracked my knuckled and pulled out my cell phone. I ran my finger along my contact list.

“What is it?”

“Christmas Eve isn’t until Sunday night.”

“So?”

“So, I have all day tomorrow, tomorrow night, Sunday morning, to fool around, before I have to get back to the family on Sunday afternoon.”

“Where are you going with this?”

I smiled at Lola. I figured she’d get the hint.

“No. Really?”

“Yes, really,” I said. “I’m gonna meet up with Sean.”

“Yeah, right,” she said. “Besides, he’s probably too busy this weekend.”

“As my dad always says, if you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

“But come on, Ryan, this is your break. This is the time with your free pass. You really want to just hook up with Sean again?”

“He’s the best.”

“Really?”

“The best I’ve ever had. Bar none. And I’m leaving L.A. in May. I’ve gotta enjoy this boy while I have him, you know, while I can.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Where does he live, though? He doesn’t live anywhere near here, right?”

“He lives in Elko.”

“Elko? Where’s that?”

“It’s on the way to Salt Lake City,” I said. “You go to Reno, then keep going east. It’s a little shithole in the middle of nowhere.”

“Oh God.”

“Yeah. Never been. Don’t really ever want to go.”

“How far of a drive is that?” she asked.
