Chapter Nine

The Friday before Easter, Jase’s mother, Mary Nicholas, flew in from Alaska, and Luis and Isabelle met her at the small airport in New Jersey. Jase had insisted his mother fly in the private company jet this time, which was unusual for Mary. She usually flew commercial, trying to save money wherever she could. Though Mary had taken over the Nicholas family businesses in Alaska after Jase’s father died, she still thought and acted like the humble young woman she’d been when she’d married into the Nicholas family decades earlier. In her bag she still kept a small case where she kept all the coupons she clipped.

After he picked Mary up, they drove back into Manhattan to get Hunter from school. They weren’t going back to the house in New York. The car was packed for the weekend and they were driving right out to Cider Mill Farm. Jase would follow them later with Corey and Hunter. He had a meeting and he told Luis to drive out ahead of him. This would be a smaller Easter than usual. It would only be Jase, Luis, Hunter, Isabelle, Mary, and the Reverend von Klingensmith. Ted Barker, their other good friend and neighbor, was in Europe. Cory and Gage would join them after dinner for dessert. Cory had promised his elderly mother and father he and Gage would spend Easter Sunday with them that year. Cory’s family lived about three miles from Cider Mill Farm in the little village of New Hope. Of course Gage would spend the weekend in Cory’s small apartment instead of at Cider Mill Farm. This bothered Luis because he wanted a chance to talk to his brother alone and he knew he might not get to do that.

While they drove through the tunnel, Mary filled Luis in on the latest gossip in Alaska. Isabelle sat quietly in the backseat of the Porsche Panamera and listened. Luis and Jase had built a dream home in Alaska and they spent every summer there, from May until it was time for Hunter to go back to school in September. Luis would have preferred to live there full time, but it was impossible for more than one reason. So he settled for summers, and quick weekends during the year.

In order to get downtown to Hunter’s school in the Village, Luis took the Lincoln Tunnel. The Holland Tunnel would have been faster at another time of the day. He decided to drive through Times Square, hoping to avoid traffic on the smaller streets. He could have remained on the West Side Highway. But he knew from experience there was always a lot of traffic near Chelsea on Friday afternoons. It turned out he should have taken the West Side Highway, because they wound up sitting in more traffic in Times Square thanks to some kind of construction going on Luis hadn’t heard about. But Luis wasn’t worried. He glanced at his watch and it was still two fifteen. Hunter didn’t get out until three o’clock and there was still plenty of time.
