Evangeline was right. Mercedes was guilty.

CHAPTER 7

Mercedes sat alone at the front of the bus. Each girl entered, looked at her angrily, and walked past. Ivy, with her green hair, glared without saying a word. Mercedes found her silence even more upsetting.

Tiffany stood outside of the bus talking to Giselle and Evangeline. Mercedes tried to make out what they were saying, but she couldn’t read lips. She didn’t need to. Tiffany’s face said it all. She was furious.

A big black limousine pulled up. Tiffany hopped inside, then rode away.

Giselle and Evangeline were the last ones on the bus. They sat down slowly in the seat next to Mercedes.

“What were you guys talking about?” asked Mercedes. “What’s gonna happen?”

“It’s not good, sis,” said Evangeline softly. “Tiffany is heading back first so she can talk to the parents.”

“This is so unfair,” responded Mercedes. “No one even let me defend myself!”

“Are you serious? I can’t believe you did this,” accused Giselle.

“But I didn’t do it,” hissed Mercedes.

“The proof was in your bag and you still smell like cotton candy,” declared Evangeline. “I never thought you would cheat to win.”

Giselle was too upset to let Mercedes respond. “Why do you care so much about winning? To be some superstar model? You already have GEM Sisters.”

“Because I was going to quit GEM Sisters when I won,” shouted Mercedes back.

“Quit?” said Giselle in a shocked voice.

“How could you leave us?” accused Evangeline as tears formed in her eyes. “We’re a group. We’re sisters.”

Mercedes tried to think of the words to explain, but all she could focus on was the hurt in her sister’s faces.

“Come on Evangeline. Let’s go sit somewhere else,” said Giselle.

Evangeline stood up to switch seats. “You’re my best friend Mercedes. But, right now I feel like I don’t even know you.”

***

The sun was setting as the bus rolled into the Totally Tiffany parking lot. Everyone but Mercedes was excited to be back. The runway show was only a few hours away.

Doorman Stan greeted the girls with a tense smile. Inside the lobby, Tiffany had already told the parents what had happened.

Tiffany stood near a table that held Mercedes’ spa bag and all of the guilty items. There were Jasmine’s teal shoes, the cotton candy lotion, and the bottle of green dye.

The parents gasped when Ivy entered the front door.

“Your hair! Ivy, your beautiful blonde hair!” screamed Ivy’s mom. She ran to her daughter in a panic. “What has that little monster done to you?”

Ivy’s mom ran her fingers through the green hair, hoping it wasn’t real. Over and over she lifted up the dark green locks and let them fall. She was in complete shock.

“This is a nightmare!” screamed Ivy’s mother, turning to Tiffany for support.

“We can fix this,” said Tiffany in a comforting voice. “I’ve already made a call to get a blonde wig for Ivy to wear tonight. Tomorrow we can have it dyed back to normal.”

Before Ivy’s mom could respond, Mrs. Harris burst through the front door.

“I was taking a nap at my hotel, but I got here as soon as I could,” explained Mrs.
