FOR THE REST OF THE evening, we go back to relaxing and avoid any hard topics. I actually have a good time having a leisurely dinner at the resort restaurant and watching a movie with him back in our suite.

Like the previous night, he sleeps on the couch, even though I tell him it’s all right if he wants to share the bed with me.

We both sleep late the following morning, and after breakfast on the terrace, we put on our suits and go down to the beach.

It’s still midmorning, so it’s not uncomfortably hot yet. I lie in the sun for a while, enjoying the heat on my skin. Then he convinces me to wade into the water.

I’m a decent swimmer, but I haven’t been to the beach very often in my life, so the strength of the waves takes some getting used to.

Elias is patient and as laid-back as I’ve ever seen him, laughing at my dramatic responses to the water crashing on me and giving me good advice on how to brace myself. Eventually, I can handle them on my own, and I’m able to have a good time in the water with him.

Until one particularly large wave starts coming at me. I see it approaching, and for some reason it terrifies me. I think it’s going to take me under, draw me out into the depth of the ocean. I squeal and grab for Elias instinctively as the wave submerges us.

It’s not nearly as bad as I feared.

I hold my breath, and Elias has us braced so all I get is a face full of water.

Elias is chuckling when the wave subsides. His arms move all the way around me.

I’m giggling too—partly from relief and partly because his eyes are so warm. “Don’t you dare laugh at me.”

“I’m not doing anything of the kind.” He slides his hands down my hair, pressing out some of the water. Then he cups my face with both hands. “If I’d known you’d be so clingy in the ocean, I’d have taken you to the beach a long time ago.”

I make a face at him, but my heart is melting with affection. “I’m not clingy!”

I’m sure my expression must reveal my feelings because Elias’s smile is softening into something else. “If you say so.”

“I do say so.” His face right now is everything I want. Tender. I stretch up toward him instinctively.

He leans down to meet me, his lips meeting mine in a gentle kiss.

I soften immediately to his advance, raising both hands to hold on to his shoulders. The water sloshes around us as his mouth moves against mine, his tongue darting out to tease my lips but not pushing in too far.

My body is washed in pleasure. Satisfaction. Undiluted acceptance. Because this is how it should be. I know it for sure.

I’m enjoying it so much I’m not sure I would have stopped us, but he pulls back after just a minute, before the embrace becomes deeper.

He’s smiling and breathing a little heavier than normal.
