I didn’t reply, I just continued. She must have seen my name on the leaderboard go green. I could tell she was just trying to be helpful, but it did strike me as a bit of an intrusion. A flurry of message notifications kept beeping in my ear. With each one I grew more agitated. I paused for a moment to send a reply.

Yes, just going to clear my head. x

I put my phone back in my arm band and continued running. The messages stopped. I approached the scene of the brutal beating I delivered the day before and could still see the blood stains in the stone, but the body was gone. The red of the blood had been baked black by the constant sun hitting it. At the sight of it, my bruised knuckles swelled and tingled. They remembered too.

I crouched down to inspect the blood stain closer. When I reached it, something splashed against the water’s surface beside me. I stood up and peered over into the water when I heard something impact the stone of the bridge. A tiny crater had formed with a small whisp of smoke emanating from the centre. Inside, a small, crumpled ball of lead. I didn’t immediately recognise what it was at first, but realised it was a bullet hole. Still confused about what was happening I took refuge underneath the bridge, and a third shot struck down at my feet. I looked towards the previous bridge in the distance, and a glare from something reflective blinds me for a second before a fourth shot is fired.

I scrambled beneath the bridge away from the shooter’s line of sight and hastily got my phone out. I didn’t know whether to ring the police or get in touch with Kat. I barely knew her, but I knew what her opinion would be on the matter. But it had escalated dramatically, I hadn’t been shot at before. Even in my frenzy I decided I couldn’t involve the police through fear of being caught myself.

Someone is shooting at me.

I’m at the bridge from yesterday.
