THE MAN WITH NO FUTURE

“You aren’t ever going to amount to anything.”

That was what his parents used to tell him, but he never cared much about what they had to say. He towered over both of them and knew that his anger frightened them. They just spoke down to him because they thought their parental authority gave them power over him; in some ways, it did, but that was all they had. When it came to physical strength, Andre wasn’t afraid of anyone.

He had always been larger than the people around him, even growing up. He was twice the size of people his age and twice as tough too. He naturally liked to use his size to his advantage, like any kid would if they were given such natural strength. Still, he got into more fights than he probably should have, and all of the adults in his life looked at him with pity.

That was why his parents thought he would amount to nothing.

“Where do you see yourself in the future, Andre?” his mother asked him once. “What do you think is going to happen to you?”

“I don’t know,” he had said honestly. “Should I?”

“You’re a young man now. You should at least be thinking about what you are going to do with your life.”

The truth was, at the time, he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He didn’t have many skill sets outside of being able to lift heavy things. He wasn’t passionate about many things, and he didn’t have a support system to help him navigate through any of them. His parents didn’t believe in him, he couldn’t make friends because everyone was so intimidated by him, and he wished he could do something useful with all of that strength. His future was looking so bleak.

Andre needed help, someone to help show him the right path to take, or at least one that would help him to make something of himself. He didn’t want to prove his parents right. He wanted to be successful—needed to be successful.

That was when a voice had come to him, brilliant and wise, right through the speakers of his radio. It was a rich and powerful woman named Eve Wayneright, and she had so many ideas about the future. Everything she said made sense to Andre. He didn’t have any issues with any of her opinions, to the point that it almost felt like they were sharing the same brain.

She talked about the future and what it could mean. She talked about unity. She talked about peace. She talked about serenity. The only problem was that all of the things she talked about were from a future she described and were not reality, but she had her own way of pulling the listeners into the future she envisioned. It felt so real and so perfect.

“The only thing holding us back…” Eve Wayneright’s voice sounded so soothing through the radio. The words seeped into his ears and stuck themselves to his very soul.
