Chapter Nineteen

WHEN TAMARA arrived for the gala dinner, wearing a dark grey evening dress that showed off her shoulders, she too received a hero’s welcome. Nina and another delegate dragged her onto the stage, where Nina said, with tears in her eyes, ‘I am so proud and so honoured to stand here next to this amazing woman. We love you, Tamara. Everybody in this room loves you.’

The whole room clapped, cheered and called out her name as she was given two garlands of mini carnations, waxflower and lisianthus, one around her neck and the other on her head.

She made the shortest of speeches. ‘Thank you, everybody. You’re so kind. Thank you. I was sort of hoping to just slip in here without anybody noticing...’ She had to pause for laughter and applause. ‘Thank you. I think I can say, on behalf of me and Ruslan, we’re just glad to be here.’

This brought another enormous ovation. The crowd demanded that Ruslan join her on the stage, where he embraced her, raised her hand in triumph and joined in the applause for her. As he surveyed the audience from the stage, Ruslan noticed that the chefs had come from the kitchen to applaud her, one of them with tears streaming down his face.
