TOM RACED around his apartment excitedly, checking on dinner, wishing for the hundredth time that he had a table where he could have a romantic setting. Candles and a small bouquet of flowers in a vase weren’t quite the same at a breakfast bar. He had them anyway, of course, but they didn’t have quite the same effect.

But they were only things, he knew, and things weren’t really important. What was important was that soon—any minute now—Nate would be here and in his arms again. When that happened, none of the rest of it would matter at all. Tom was aching to see Nate. It had been two weeks since they’d been together, and though they’d managed to catch each other on the phone a couple of times, it wasn’t at all the same as when they were together. Being on the road meant they were immersed in work mode, and since they didn’t talk about work, conversations consisted mainly of, “God, I miss you.”

Tom had put fresh sheets on the bed and given the apartment a final look when his phone rang. It was his doorman; Nate was on the way up. Tom checked himself out in the mirror. He was wearing Nate’s favorite shirt—a simple green T-shirt, but Nate loved it on him—and a pair of soft, worn jeans. Unable to contain his anticipation, he tapped his bare toes on the tile of the foyer. Down the hall outside the door he heard the electronic “ding” of the elevator as it arrived on his floor. Finally, after what seemed like an interminable pause, the door opened and there was his boyfriend.

Usually Tom and Nate waited for the door to close before embracing each other—not today. Nate was in the door and wrapping himself around Tom the instant he spotted him standing waiting for him, nuzzling his head into Tom’s neck. Grinning at Nate’s eagerness, Tom stretched out with one foot to push the door closed.

“Hi.”

“Hi.” Nate’s reply was muffled as his face was still buried in Tom’s neck. Tom waited, but Nate didn’t seem anxious to move from that spot any time soon.

Dying for a kiss, Tom finally said, “Hey, what’s a guy gotta do to get a kiss from his boyfriend?”

Immediately Nate’s lips were against his, their mouths opening and tongues finding each other again for the first time in too long. It was as if Tom suddenly couldn’t be enough inside, enough around Nate, wanting to be enmeshed with him. It wasn’t even a sexual thing; it was more basic, the most powerful longing he’d ever felt. Too soon he felt Nate break their kiss, resting his forehead against Tom’s.

“Fuck, I missed you,” Nate said, his voice hoarse. “Every second.”

Tom kissed him softly, a chaste brush against his lips. “I missed you too. So glad you’re here.” They stood a long time holding each other, the desperation of a moment earlier having evaporated.

Eventually Nate said, “Dinner smells great.”

Tom took his hand and led him to the breakfast bar, where the candles glowed softly.
