Chapter ten
Sophie needs to be punished. Donât you think?
In the cold and unforgiving light of the next day, Thomas is still wondering what the hell has happened to him. To Sophie. To their life. A life that seemingly started perfectly normally this morning. Rising from bed. Shower. Breakfast. The usual trip to work and then a few hours spent fighting fires. Not literally. Although he wonders if that might have helped him if he had chosen that kind of a role instead of working in an office.
Would Sophie have been more in awe of him? The way she clearly must be in awe of her new lover to have let him have sex with her in the carpark at work?
He ought not to think about that. Not here. Not in the office. Not when one particular set of eyes is already looking his way after heâs been so quiet this morning.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â Janice asks for the thirteenth time since this morningâs tea break. âOnly you look a little pale. Why donât you take five minutes? Go and get some air?â
He nods. He could do that. He would do that. If sheâd just look away. Give him a second to compose himself. Because itâs the most awkward of moments, otherwise. His current physical condition not being conducive to rising from his chair just now. Not in polite company. Not when Janice, the middle-aged spinster who has a tendency to mother and flirt with him, is staring at him and wonât look away.
Especially not after what happened between them yesterday.
âIâm fine,â he says, nodding. Nodding while looking back at his computer and trying to read the words that blur in front of him.
Only he isnât fine. Not according to the sweat that beads on his forehead and not according to the way Janice jumps up from her chair and rushes over to him.
At least itâs just the two of them in here. He does have to thank the heavens for that small mercy. Because he doesnât manage to keep his physical condition private from her. Not when she moves in so close that sheâd have to be blind not to notice that heâs hard.
âIâm sorry,â he says, shaking his head and actually damn near hanging it in his hands. âI can explain.â Except that he canât.
But she nods anyway. She nods, and she waits. And is it his imagination, or does she keep looking at him? Down there. Her eyes sliding over the protruding ridge in his trousers while she licks her lips. Licks her lips and looks at him like heâs her midday snack?
âIf thereâs anything I can do to help,â she says, eyelashes fluttering as she makes eye contact. âAnd I mean anything. Anything at all. If you wanted to talk or even not talk. You know Iâm here for you, right? You understand that Iâm a woman on my own with no commitments and⦠well, I know youâre married and you have a beautiful wife who I canât possibly compete with, but Iâve learnt to compensate for my lack of beauty.
