Chapter Thirteen

Adam had received another phone call from Stu at two a.m., telling him to drive to a house on King and wait outside it, staying in the van, and to put on the gloves and balaclava from the phone shop episode.

“I don’t have them,” he whispered in the bathroom, where he’d gone as soon as his ringtone had blared into the darkness.

Thankfully, Sally hadn’t stirred, so he was safe from any questions there. It felt wrong, sitting on the edge of the bath and taking orders from some bloke in the middle of the night, like his other life was encroaching on the good part, the part he wanted to keep safe and separate.

Stu sighed as though Adam was getting on his last nerve. “What do you mean you don’t have them?”

It was time to admit the truth, something Adam had been dreading, but they’d have found out eventually, and better that he told Stu and not Dee. “I torched my van earlier and dumped the mask and gloves in the river.”

“You utter fucking knob. Now you’ll have the police round yours. They’ll find out who the van belongs to if the VIN hasn’t been melted off and ask why you didn’t report it as stolen.”

At least Adam had his answer ready for that one. “I planned to tell them it wasn’t worth much so I didn’t bother.” He must remember to tell the DVLA it wasn’t being used now. He’d already cancelled the tax and insurance, switching them over to the new one.

“Have you got another van?” Stu asked.

“Yeah. Bought it earlier.”

“That’s something then. Does your missus wear tights?”

What did he want to know that for, the fucking perv? “You what?”

“Just answer the question.”

“Yes, sometimes, if we’re going out to the pub.”

“Then cut a leg off to use it for a mask. Got any of your own gloves?”

“No, but Sally’s got washing-up ones.”

“They’ll do. When you reach the destination, someone will put false plates on your van. Magnets on the car so the plates stick to it, easy to take on and off. They’ll be yours for every job, and after this one, it’s up to you to stop somewhere with no cameras and switch plates, got it?”

Adam floundered in the sea called Not Knowing, where he was expected to do shit with no information—or the bare facts. “I don’t know anything about cameras and where they are.”

“Fuck’s sake.”

“You’re meant to be teaching me, according to Dee, and so far, I know jack shit.”

“That’s enough of your cheek, so shut your boat before I get arsey. I’ll text you the best place to go. Now get ready. You have to be there by half two because there’s a neighbour who leaves for work at four, and everything to do with the job needs to be finished by then.”

Stu cut the call, and Adam stared at the phone screen, a picture of Sally and the kids as his background. He had to do this, for them, to keep them safe, but Christ, he didn’t like it.
