CHAPTER 15

Nico

Perhaps it was time I looked a little more into the life of my Kitten.

She’d looked like she was on the verge of panic as she’d entered the club tonight. I didn’t know a lot about her story, but I knew enough. I’d heard the tale before. A woman rises through the ranks in a company, some men don’t like it, and some men feel rejected, so they put her in a position to fail, or to be so miserable she’ll quit.

And she’d been scared.

Anger, white hot furious anger, had shot through me. Kitten was my submissive, and people didn’t hurt the people that were mine. You didn’t even touch the people that were mine. My family, my soldiers, my goddamn sub, you didn’t go at them without some serious consequences.

More than that, Kitten didn’t deserve to be treated like this. She was just trying to do her damn job—a job that someone had forced her into, it sounded like. I wanted to find this little shit who’d harassed her and wring his neck. Strangling him would be a goddamn mercy in my opinion. I could treat him much, much worse.

I wondered if the client Kitten talked about was one of the other mafia men. Maybe a second or third son. I was the oldest so I was in charge of my family, and I had one brother who found an occupation as our family hitman, but I also had a brother who had nothing to do and so he dabbled in various shit and got into trouble. A lot of other younger sons were the same way. They were dangerous because they were spoiled and bored.

I could send out some feelers. See who…

No, Nico. Kitten wouldn’t want me interfering. She wanted to do this on her own, and I admired her for that. I wasn’t going to go behind her back and fix this for her, as much as I wanted to.

Besides, Davis would kill me if I started a war with another family or got involved in a legitimate business over my sub. If she was my girlfriend, my wife, maybe…

Well, she wasn’t, and that was that.

But what if—

No. I had to stay out of this. I had to keep things separate. If nothing else than because I was a little fucking busy with these cops messing with me and my businesses. I hoped my little warning to the detective would put her off. I had decided to start small, with just a rat. It wasn’t so much about the violence as it was letting her know that I could get to her anywhere. I knew exactly where she slept.

I was curious how she would respond. She didn’t seem like the type to scare easily, but I could be wrong. I would have to wait and see.

In the meantime, I thought Kitten deserved a little treat.

“Sir?” Davis looked startled that I wasn’t sitting at my desk the next morning but rather quickly setting aside some papers on my way out the door.
