I woke up as a streak of sunlight poured in from the high, narrow window and spilled across my face. I forgot where I was for a moment… and then everything came back to me.

I sat up fast. My nightgown fell open where Gabriel had ripped it the night before. It almost seemed like a dream—the dark room, the tall figure towering in the doorway. The slow, hard footsteps as he came toward my bed. The way the mattress shifted as he settled his weight beside me. The way his eyes had looked in the moonlight. Intense. Hungry. In control.

And then…

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. My torn nightgown proved it had not been a dream. It had really happened. He had run his big hands over my body. All over my body. In places no man had ever touched me before. The memory made me feel hot and flushed.

And confused.

I could have said no. I should have said no. But I had not wanted to. I liked the way he made me feel. I liked the thrill, the intensity, the mystery. He wasn’t like any man I’d ever met before.

I needed to spend more time with him to figure out what was happening to me. I threw off the covers and frowned. Was I developing feelings for Gabriel? No. I shook my head as I stood up and walked to the bathroom. That was impossible. I would never develop feelings for a man who forced me to give up my freedom in exchange for my family’s safety.

But he hadn’t forced me to come here. I had made the choice to come. He was upfront about his requirements. He didn’t trick me. He didn’t coerce me. He gave me an offer and I accepted it. I slipped off my nightgown and stepped into the shower. It seemed like too much to sort through. Shouldn’t I be angry at him for holding me captive?

Or was I even a captive? Are you really a captive if you choose to be one? It was all so confusing. I sighed and turned on the water as hot as I could stand it. I stood beneath the steam until it ran cold, pondering my feelings and wondering where to go from here.

After my shower I dressed in a hurry. My heart beat faster at the thought of seeing Gabriel again—and at the thought of his big, masculine hands exploring my body again. I tried to push the thought aside. But my body wouldn’t let me. It craved more of what he had given me the night before.

The realization frustrated me, but I couldn’t deny it. His voice echoed in my mind. His tone had been firm and dominant, as always, while he touched me. But he had asked permission. He had been gentle, careful. He didn’t force me or pressure me. He made sure I wanted everything he did. I wasn’t afraid of him anymore. I knew he was telling the truth when he said he wouldn’t hurt me.
