Chapter 8 Shadows in the attic
She liked the man walking around the house looking, studying, and talking to himself. He was family. She could trust him. Maybe he would help her find answers and bring peace to these unsettled grounds.
Hayes, always the adventurer, looked at the crumbling walls, sagging roof, and peeling plaster and knew this would be his biggest adventure yet. He wasnât worried about ghosts or spirits or whatever haunted the decaying house. Surprisingly, he felt a sense of peace. A sense of duty settling over him. Someone needed his help; he could feel it. Who? Why?
Maybe he should put down roots here in Sunridge Junction. Benjamin Mason had left him some money. It was money he planned to give away because he wanted nothing to do with his birth father. Now, though, the money could be used to restore the once elegant home and bring it back to life. Then, on the other hand, what in the world would he do with a home this size? He could turn it into an inn or live here and write novels when he wasnât traveling the world. Yes, maybe there were possibilities in the old Mason home.
Thatâs when he saw Lily and the three dogs open the rusty gate and head for the front door. He opened it before she could knock. Something about Lily made his heart pound a little faster. Her auburn hair and hazel eyes seem to match her vibrant and warm personality. It was her kind heart, though, that had him wanting to ask her out to dinner.
âHey, I didnât expect to see the four of you this morning,â he said as he opened the door wider.
âI didnât expect to be here this morning. These canine detectives dragged me to your door. Is it okay if I let them roam the property? They seem curious.â Lily smiled up at him.
âSure. Come on in. Iâm trying to get the lay of the land and decide what I should tackle first.â
They stood on the porch and watched the three dogs run off toward the back of the house and head straight for the creek.
Digger led the way, trying to avoid the large rocks and prickly weeds that scratched his low dachshund belly. Daisy looked like a bunny rabbit hopping over the weeds, while Dash just plowed through it all, heading for the sound of the creek rushing over the rocks.
âI smell something old buried around here.â Digger stopped about ten feet from the creek near a clump of trees.
âIt doesnât smell like an animal. It smells more like the books in Ethanâs library,â Daisy said, her nose on the ground as she headed for the first maple tree.
âStand back, ladies. My doxie paws are ready to dig up some dirt.â Soon, Digger had moist dirt flying in all directions. When he stopped and the three of them looked down into the deep hole heâd dug, they saw what looked like a large book wrapped in baby blankets.
âDaisy, youâd better get Lily and bring her down here.
